CMS Posts Understanding OASIS GG & M Function Items Coding Fact Sheet

CMS has now provided a new Fact Sheet: Understanding OASIS Function M & GG Item Coding.  This new fact sheet provides updated guidance related to whether the industry should expect to see consistency between the OASIS “M” functional items and “GG” activity codes. The announcement released on March 5th; states that the industry shouldn’t expect to see consistency between the codes of items of same or similar names. Coding differences may be a result of what is included or excluded in the activity or what coding instructions apply to the activity.  It is important to remember that each OASIS item should be considered individually and coded based on guidance specific to that item.

This fact sheet is available at https://www.cms.gov/Medicare/Quality-Initiatives-Patient-Assessment-Instruments/HomeHealthQualityInits/Home-Health-Quality-Reporting-Training.html in the downloads section at hte bottom of the page.

To provide further clarification, OASIS Answers recently held a Just in Time webinar in February called "Collecting & Auditing GG & M Function Items: It’s Not a Match Game". There is a companion webinar scheduled for May that will provide helpful tips for assessment strategies and documentation support to ensure coding accuracy for both the M and GG functional items.

Please visit www.oasisanswers.com and navigate to the training section to purchase recordings of the February webinar and to sign up for our May live event.
