Coding OASIS COVID-19: Where to Find CDC’s Up-to-Date Definition

by Kerry Termine, DPT, HCS-D, COS-C

The updated OASIS-E1 includes a new item—O0350: COVID-19 Vaccination is Up to Date—which asks whether a patient’s COVID-19 vaccine status meets the CDC’s “up to date” definition. To accurately complete this item, home health agencies (HHAs) must rely on the CDC’s most current guidance on COVID-19 vaccination.

Where to Find the Most Current CDC COVID-19 Vaccine Guidance

The OASIS-E1 Guidance Manual contains a link in the definition box for “up to date” for O0350. This is no longer an active link. Providers can now use the Staying Up to Date with COVID-19 Vaccines page on the CDC website. This is the most reliable and current resource available to determine if a patient meets the up-to-date criteria for COVID-19 vaccination.

Special Considerations for Immunocompromised Patients

The CDC webpage outlines two main groups when defining “up to date” COVID-19 vaccination status:

  • Patients who are moderately or severely immunocompromised
  • Patients who are not immunocompromised

For immunocompromised individuals, guidance can be found on the CDC website: COVID-19 Vaccines for Moderately or Severely Immunocompromised People.

How Age and Vaccine History Affect ‘Up to Date’ Status

In addition to immune status, the CDC also provides specific vaccine recommendations based on:

  • The patient’s age
  • The patient’s personal COVID-19 vaccination history
  • The type(s) of vaccine received

These factors influence whether someone is considered “up to date” with their COVID-19 vaccinations, so it’s essential to review the CDC’s detailed breakdown for each population.

While the CDC does not update this webpage on a fixed schedule, changes do occur frequently as public health guidance evolves. HHAs are strongly encouraged to check the CDC page regularly, and communicate changes to their clinicians.
